Would Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk improve Chelsea?

The Express claim that Chelsea are preparing to launch a £60 million bid for Southampton central defender Virgil Van Dijk in order to fend off interest from Manchester City and ensure that the Dutchman moves to Stamford Bridge. The Saints vice-captain has been one of the club’s best performers this season and has attracted interest from a host of clubs all seeking to add his services to their defences as he has been highlighted as the latest talent to hit the headlines on the south coast.

What would he bring to Chelsea?

Virgil Van Dijk shares many traits with former target Leonardo Bonucci before the Juve man signed a new deal in Turin, such as his power, aerial prowess and leadership. All three will be desperately needed with John Terry struggling with injuries this season and expected to depart in the summer, and Van Dijk could be the perfect man to take his place. Assured on the ball too, Van Dijk could be the perfect fit for the Blues’ back line.

Is a move likely?

Van Dijk has been linked with almost every big club in the Premier League, but Chelsea are perhaps in the greatest need for an addition and the fact that the Netherlands international is proven in England is a major plus. The 25-year-old is not actively seeking an exit but is thought to be keen to take his career to the next level if the opportunity presents itself.

Verdict

7/10 – The move makes sense and Chelsea may move quickly as they try to persuade Van Dijk that he should move to London rather than Manchester. Southampton will be reluctant to sell mid-season without a replacement lined up but money could talk here if Antonio Conte is keen on one of the league’s best performers so far this season.
