Despite Newcastle United’s relegation from the Premier League last campaign, the Magpies still hold a lot of valuable players that could be of great use at a higher level over the coming season. Andros Townsend has already departed for Crystal Palace, whilst the likes of Tim Krul, Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijanldum would be quality additions to any top flight side.
The latter, Wijnaldum, was Newcastle’s most potent attacking threat last season, at it is obvious that the Dutch player is far too good to spend a year playing in the Championship, especially now he is entering the prime of his career at 25 years of age. Thankfully for Wijnaldum, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interest in a move to secure his services, but would this be the right move for both club and player.
For Wijnaldum, the answer is certainly yes. To move from playing in the Championship to a Champions League club would be a massive step up for his career. Even if he were to not establish himself in the Spurs starting line up, a season battling with quality attacking players with sporadic appearances in cup games and from the bench would certainly be better for his development than coasting in the Championship for a season.
As for Spurs, signing Wijnaldum would also prove to be a smart piece of business. Whilst they have plenty of attacking midfield talent in the shape of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele, the increased competition provided by Champions League football means that they could really do with strengthening this area.
Not only would Wijnaldum challenge these players for a place in the side and provide cover for any injuries, he would also bring his own unique style and quality to the team. Having scored 11 goals and providing five assists in a struggling Newcastle side, the former PSV Eindhoven captain showed that he is already a player of proven Premier League quality. He is an excellent creative force with a calm head in front of goal, and crucially for Spurs, has the stamina to fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s high pressing style.
His time with the Dutch national team has also shown he is a player who can cut it on the international stage after some impressive performances in their run to third place in the 2014 World Cup. New coach Danny Blind has already shown a lot of faith in the 30 cap midfielder as he attempts to rebuild the side that failed miserably to qualify for the Euros.
Whether or not Wijnaldum is being targeted as a starter or not, he would provide excellent competition and another level of quality to Tottenham’s attacking midfield options. Providing Newcastle don’t hold out for too high a fee, Wijnaldum could prove to be an excellent addition at White Hart Lane, and could help them improve on their 3rd place finish last season.
