Whilst Manchester United are usually linked with some of the biggest names in world football, Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web have suggested that their latest target is lesser known. Middlesbrough’s Marten De Roon has been linked with an Old Trafford move for €10 million (£8.8 million).
What would he bring to Old Trafford?
The 26-year-old proved himself in the Premier League last season with his excellent tackling and breaking up of play in a deep midfield role. That is exactly the kind of strength that United are looking for in the middle of the park in order to liberate the likes of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba.
De Roon’s strength and discipline in midfield would be a welcome asset for Jose Mourinho as he looks to rebuild his squad. With more depth needed for a Champions League challenge next season, the Middlesbrough man could be a cheap option to add depth to midfield.
The Dutch international is also strong and powerful in the air, as he showed to the delight of United fans when he scored a last minute equaliser at the Etihad.

Is a move likely?
De Roon is bound to be looking for a move away from the north-east after his side’s relegation having shown his abilities in the top flight. However, it seems unrealistic that Old Trafford could be his destination.
Manchester United may well have monitored his progress but he was not such a standout star as to be one of their top targets. With their huge financial power, the likes of Nemanja Matic or Fabinho seem far more likely to join the club.
