Would Manchester United really sell Luke Shaw to rivals Chelsea or Tottenham?

The Independent claim that both Chelsea and Tottenham are monitoring the situation of full-back Luke Shaw as Jose Mourinho has become fed up with his lack of improvement on the training ground. The 21-year-old could be sold in the summer, as a result, and the two Premier League giants may be ready to step in with a bid for the England international should the Red Devils decide that he is no longer needed in Manchester.

Why would United let him go?

Jose Mourinho is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated by Luke Shaw’s lack of development having failed to progress since coming to the club and breaking his leg in a nasty incident only months into his Old Trafford career last season. The left back has been suffering from a groin injury but has since been left out of the squad and has not played for the first team since November, so he may not be missed after all. Mourinho publicly criticised Shaw after defeat to Watford and then appeared to be frustrated by his lack of fitness ahead of a game against Swansea, so the relationship between the two may not be as good as it seems.

Is a move to one of these two clubs likely?

Possibly. Chelsea are keen to add homegrown players and have been linked with Shaw before, but it is hard to see how he would fit into Antonio Conte’s system as a wing back without putting in some hard work on the training ground. Tottenham’s interest may depend on Danny Rose’s future, and United would possibly be keen to involve the England international in any deal should they look to ship Shaw out.

Verdict

2/10 – No chance. Shaw does seem to be struggling under Mourinho, but it seems unlikely that the club would look to cut their losses so quickly on a homegrown player with so much potential, least of all to one of their biggest rivals as they look to regain a place in the top four.
