Would Manchester United or Arsenal be a better fit for this 22-year-old German?

An important summer lies ahead for Julian Draxler. The 22-year-old German winger has been one of the Bundesliga’s star performers over the last couple of years. After beginning his career at Schalke, the Gladbeck-born player joined Wolfsburg last summer as Kevin De Bruyne’s replacement, and has since further enhanced his burgeoning reputation as one of Europe’s most promising players.

His progress has led to rumours of a move to England, with Arsenal and Manchester United both being linked to the player. Supporters of both clubs would surely welcome Draxler’s signature, but which side would be a better fit for the player himself?

Pacey, accomplished with both feet and with a keen eye for goal, Draxler has the makings of a winger that could thrive in the Premier League. Although he is predominantly deployed as a left winger, he is capable of playing down both the right and through the middle.

Draxler’s first touch is exquisite, which would certainly help him in the Premier League where there is little time for players to dwell on the ball. Although he is not really an out-and-out winger, Draxler does also like to run at opposition full-backs. His playing style would suit both United and Arsenal, and his versatility would mean he could operate in any of three positions behind the striker.

If Draxler were to join the Old Trafford outfit, he would face competition from Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay for his favoured position down the left wing. The German impressed for Wolfsburg whilst playing against United in the Champions League last year and his dribbling ability would offer The Red Devils something different.

With the additions of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic already announced, Jose Mourinho has already brought in some extra bite to an attack that looked toothless for large parts of the last campaign. A front four of Ibrahimovic, Martial, Mkhitaryan and Draxler certainly seems exciting on paper, but would it work in practice? Possibly, but with Mourinho setting his sights on Paul Pogba as United’s fourth and final signing of the summer, it appears unlikely that we will see Draxler lining up in a United shirt any time soon.

On the other hand, it appears Draxler has long been in the thinking of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. He is certainly the type of footballer that the Frenchman admires, but whether he is actually willing to take the plunge is a different matter. With a wide-ranging ensemble of attacking midfielders, who Wenger is fiercely loyal to, Draxler would have to earn his spot in the Arsenal starting eleven if he was to make the switch to North London.

It is rumoured that it would take a fee in the region of £40 million to persuade Wolfsburg to part with the player, a fee that the famously parsimonious Wenger is unlikely to be willing to pay. Whilst Arsenal do need to strengthen their squad to compete for the title, a new striker is certainly a more pressing issue at this moment, and most Gunners fans would prefer to see such an amount spent on that area of the squad.

One way that Draxler could end up at Arsenal is if Alexis Sanchez was to leave the club this summer. With rumours that Juventus are looking at the Chile international, Wenger may see Draxler as a potential replacement if he were to lose his star man.

At this moment, it does not seem as though Draxler is certain to be moving to either club, but it is by far from implausible that he could move to the Premier League this summer. Whilst Arsenal would be the more obvious destination for him, the possibility of that aforementioned front four at United would be a frightening prospect.
