Arsenal are one of the sides interested in signing Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren this summer, according to a report from TEAMtalk this week.
The Gunners however, are battling with a number of clubs for the Croatian’s signature. TEAMtalk notes that the likes of Crystal Palace, Tottenham and West Ham United also want the centre-back.
In truth, it is something of a surprise to see Arsenal target Lovren. Mikel Arteta is well-stocked for options at the back. And Lovren has struggled to silence all of his doubters during his time on Merseyside.
Should the 30-year-old – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – decide that securing first-team football is his priority, you would imagine that a move to the London Stadium may appeal more than a switch to the Emirates.
But if that proves to be the case, missing out on Lovren may have a clear upside for Arteta following reports from earlier this month.
The Daily Mirror reported that Arsenal want Issa Diop this summer.
If West Ham manage to land Lovren, they may not be looking to offload Diop. But with his form proving a little more underwhelming this term, perhaps they may be more open to offers for the Frenchman.
The Mirror noted that West Ham would want at least £45 million for Diop if they stay up. So it looks more than likely that would cost significantly more than Lovren.
But Diop is more than seven years younger than the former Southampton man. He has time to improve considerably in the coming years.
So perhaps it may be fair to suggest that missing out on Lovren could help Arteta land another of his targets if all of the pieces fall into place.
