Would Juventus’ Paul Pogba be Manchester United’s most important summer signing?

Manchester United will always be a club that are linked with big names, whether they have Champions League football or not. With Jose Mourinho arriving this summer, there is perhaps even more of an impetus than ever at Old Trafford to secure a big name signing, and there is no bigger available name at the moment than Paul Pogba of Juventus.

United fans will remember Pogba well, of course. A youth product at Old Trafford, a lack of first team football and some rather ridiculous wage demands encouraged the Frenchman to try his luck in Italy, where he has won four Serie A titles and played in a Champions League final with Juventus.

But with Serie A not the competition it used to be, and 23-year-old Pogba looking ready to step up to a bigger challenge, United have been sniffing around to try and get their former starlet back. They are reportedly the only club willing to break the world transfer record for Pogba, as the £100 million barrier could be smashed by Mourinho.

But what would Pogba bring back to his former club?

Well, he is a very good player for a start. Pogba has grown in Italy into a real powerhouse of a midfielder. He is an incredibly skillful presence in the middle of the park, and has scored some fabulous goals in his time. Furthermore, he has wonderful energy, is incredibly strong and, importantly, still has the potential to get better.

This is not to say Pogba is perfect, however. He has the potential to be a bit of a hothead on occasions, and is not always enamoured with completing his defensive duties. He has had a mixture of wonderful and indifferent performances for France at the Euros, and has yet to show the sort of consistency that would mark him out as a real world class talent.

However, he would undoubtedly be an improvement on Manchester United’s current midfield. Marouane Fellaini was often picked last season to provide a physical presence, but is also a mixture of slow, sloppy and sometimes even downright poor. Pogba brings everything Fellaini adds physically to a side, including aerial ability, whilst actually adding footballing nous in the middle of the park.

If he were to play with Morgan Schneiderlin in a central midfield two, Pogba would also have the freedom to advance forward and join in the attacks with new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, giving United more of a threat going forward.

He may not be the complete player yet, and £100 million is definitely too much money, but Pogba would undoubtedly add the kind of power and footballing skill that it has been missing for some time. United would be wise to try and find a cheaper alternative to Pogba before diving into the deal, but the Frenchman would definitely add a great deal of quality to the side. It won’t be cheap, but it could be a brilliant signing for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.
