Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shevley is reportedly “touch and go” for Saturday’s home match against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
According to the Chronicle, the 26-year-old has been assessed by medics over the last couple of days and the Magpies are waiting to hear the extend of the damage on a muscle injury that forced him off against Watford last weekend.
Rafael Benitez’s side earned their first win of the season against Watford at St James’ Park and Ki Sung-Yueng looked far more effective in the centre of the park than Shelvey had done in the first-half before his setback.
Shelvey has not quite been on top of his game recently and it could be a blessing in disguise if he misses out against Bournemouth.
The central midfielder can help dictate matches for Newcastle when on form, but this term has been part of a struggling side and hasn’t been able to make his mark.
He has been a mainstay in the starting XI over the last year and perhaps the added competition for places in the team through the shape of Ki could help improve his own game.
Shelvey could return a week later fresh from any injury problems and get back to the kind of form that helped Newcastle steer away from relegation trouble last season.
