‘Would be amazing’: Some Crystal Palace fans react to links with Zlatan Ibrahimovic-like 23-year-old

A number of Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the report in The Independent claiming the Eagles are eyeing Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The outlet claims that the Selhurt Park outfit has been assessing potential options to bolster Roy Hodgson’s attacking ranks.

Palace are currently 13th in the Premier League with 23 points and have picked up just one win from their last eight matches.

Christian Benteke has scored just three goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season, while Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi is yet to register a single goal for the Eagles.

Mateta, who has scored 10 goals in 17 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga strugglers, is believed to be high on the club’s list of options.

The Independent claims that Mainz have not ruled out selling Mateta this month, but the club would demand a sizeable fee to let go of their asset.

The 23-year-old, who represented France at youth level, joined the German side from Lyon in 2018 and currently has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

Mateta cites Zlatan Ibrahimovic as an inspiration, being quoted by the Bundesliga official website as saying: “I watched him play when I was younger and I said ‘I want to play like that’. I’m a similar size to him, and I play in a similar style.”

The same article quoted former Mainz boss Sandro Schwarz as saying: “He’s a very good finisher. He’s already proved that. He has a very good scoring rate and causes a lot of danger in the penalty area but he’s also good at runs in the final third.”
