Alan Shearer says Arsenal getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new contract would be a “major boost” for the Gunners and “key” in terms of moving forward.

Aubameyang’s current deal expires next summer but speculation regarding the Arsenal striker penning a new contract has increased in recent weeks.

On Friday, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said fans can “relax” over the Gabon international’s contract situation, adding that he is “really optimistic” over a breakthrough being made.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have snapped up Willian and Gabriel Magalhaes, secured another loan move for Dani Ceballos, and signed 2019-20 loanees Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares permanently.

While the Gunners have done well in bolstering their ranks, Shearer said a contract renewal – in this case, Aubameyang’s – can also be “massive”.

He told BBC Sport: “Arsenal are another team that seem to be going places, and you cannot help but be impressed by what Mikel Arteta has done since he took charge at the end of last year.

He has won the FA Cup and now the Community Shield and, when you watch his side, you can see they look a lot tighter and are a proper unit when they face the top teams.

“It’s not just signings that can change the whole mood of a club, though. Keeping a player can be massive and what might be key for the Gunners and where they go from here is what happens next with their star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“The Arsenal fans are sitting and waiting, desperate for Aubameyang to sign his new deal. I know he’s got a year left on his contract but it would be a major boost if he committed his future to the club.”

Aubameyang is arguably Arsenal’s most important player and enjoyed another wonderful season in the red and white last time out, scoring 29 goals, winning the FA Cup and taking over the Gunners team captaincy.

This season he has picked up where he left off, with a goal in the Community Shield, and with the Premier League season getting under way soon, there’s no doubt he’s got another prolific campaign ahead of him.

And with Arteta hinting towards a positive outcome regarding Aubameyang’s contract, it looks as though Arsenal fans will get to enjoy their star man’s goalscoring heroics for longer than just one more season.
