Arsenal are reportedly edging closer to sealing a deal to sign William Saliba. According to The London Evening Standard, Arsenal are just applying the finishing touches on this deal, which would cost around £25m.

But Saliba will not be joining Arsenal immediately. Instead, Saint-Etienne will get him back on loan for the 2019/20 season before he moves to North London in summer 2020.

Saliba is considered one of the most promising young defenders in France. And although Unai Emery wants him now, he is prepared to wait so that he does not miss out on Saliba for the long-term.

William Saliba: an exciting talent

The 18-year-old has already played a handful of games in the Saint-Etienne first-team and is expected to be a regular next season. With playing time guaranteed, this could be a shrewd long-term purchase for the Gunners.

But while Arsenal wait for the France U20 international, they need a short-term solution too. Emery is discontent with his current defensive options so he might try to sign another defender.

Therefore, Arsenal are negotiating with Saint-Etienne to drive down the upfront cost of this Saliba deal seen as he is heading back on loan.
