A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the prospect of Japhet Tanganga replacing Jan Vertonghen.
Vertonghen is out of contract at the end of the season and it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll be ending his eight-year association with Spurs.
However, no extension has been agreed with Spurs as of yet, and there’s a possibility he might not even see out the season, given his contract runs out on 30 June.
As for Tanganga, he has gone from strength to strength this season, breaking into the Spurs first team, and has 11 senior appearances to date.
According to Football London, Tottenham activated an extra-year option in his contract – a one-year deal penned last summer – some months ago to ensure he will not be a free agent this summer.
The outlet claims that discussions over a new long-term contract are set to get under way once normality returns, with Jose Mourinho believing Tanganga is an important player for the future.
But what do Spurs fans make of the prospect of Tanganga taking over from Vertonghen? Below are some of the social media comments:
Not yet, but hopefully in time.

The recency bias of how terrible Jan was and how “energetic” Tanganga, is typical Spurs. Jan’s intelligence alone makes him extremely valuable to the team. He’s still above Tanganga in the depth chart. Below Toby and Sanchez.

Yes , with bells on . Love Jan but I’d be seriously concerned if spurs considered extending a new contract. In the last 12 months he has plainly struggled with pace – an area that Tanganga has well covered

100% yes, one of the most promising talents we’ve got at the club
