'Worst plan B', 'Makes no sense': Some Arsenal fans quiz Arteta's alternative option to Maddison

Arsenal will reportedly target Renato Sanches if the Gunners miss out on signing James Maddison.

According to the Daily Mail, Mikel Arteta’s side are fans of the Lille midfielder. Furthermore, if Maddison proves to be out of reach for Arsenal this summer, the north London side will pivot to the Portugual international.

Indeed, Sanches enjoyed a sensational season with Lille as Les Dogues won their first Ligue 1 title in almost a decade, pipping PSG to the championship on the final day of the campaign.

The midfielder made 23 appearances for Lille, with Sanches also impressing for Portugal at Euro 2020.

However, because of the financial crisis currently engulfing the majority of French football, Lille are looking to sell this summer to recoup funds.

Arsenal could pounce on this opportunity. Moreover, the Gunners have signed two players from the Ligue 1 side in the past two summer transfer windows.

Although Sanches would be a quality addition to the Arsenal squad, fans on social media are not keen on the Portuguese midfielder being seen as an alternative to Maddison for the number ten role.

Here’s what some Arsenal fans had to say on Twitter about Sanches being Arteta’s alternative to Maddison…

Arsenal have already signed one midfielder this summer in the form of R.S.C. Anderlecht star Albert Sambi Lokonga.
