'Worst day of my life': Some Newcastle fans react to 'absurd' club announcement
Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Florian Lejeune had been sold to Alavés.
What’s the story?
Well, this is a quite baffling decision from the Magpies.
Lejeune was arguably Newcastle’s best defender before he sadly suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries in each knee.
After then struggling to get back into the starting XI, the Frenchman spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Alavés.
Clearly, he impressed in La Liga, as the Spanish outfit have now shelled out to sign him permanently.
However, you have to question what Steve Bruce and those on the recruitment team at St James’ Park are thinking.
Unless Bruce is expecting some new centre-backs to arrive on Tyneside, this is a bizarre decision.
As one fan mentions below, Newcastle lost Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark at the same time last season.
It led to panic in the centre-back department, with Bruce resorting to squeezing square pegs into round holes to fill the gaps.
It would’ve made sense to keep Lejeune around, at least until another centre-back has been signed.
Now, Newcastle have put themselves in a difficult position.
Understandably, the Newcastle fans on Twitter cannot believe this decision.
Let’s see what they’ve been saying after the Magpies cashed in on Lejeune…
I cannot understand this. I’m absolutely gutted tbh. https://t.co/fEIBgADUOV— Amy (@bobblestea) July 22, 2021
why have we sold our best defender https://t.co/eNAEBgsDTR— harvey is a silly individual (@HarveyTake4) July 22, 2021
Very silly move IMO. One of the better defenders we’ve got. Unless we’re looking to STRENGTHEN our back line I don’t even understand this. Look what happened when we let him on loan & lost Lascelles Clark and Schär in the same period. https://t.co/HTb4yN6KKI— Kendall Rowan ⚽️ (@kendallrowanx) July 22, 2021
