Heung-Min Son was apparently keen to sign for Liverpool back in 2022.
Football is filled with sliding doors moments and what ifs. The beautiful game lends itself brilliantly to careers, clubs and managers’ fortunes changing in just one moment, and apparently, Heung-Min Son’s career almost took a real turn in 2022.
According to The Telegraph, there was a distinct possibility of the South Korean leaving Tottenham at the end of that season if Spurs hadn’t qualified for the Champions League.
As many will remember, Spurs pipped Arsenal to that fourth-place spot right at the end of the 2021/22 season as Mikel Arteta’s side crumbled towards the end of the season.

This meant that Tottenham qualified for Europe’s premier competition, and ultimately, that apparently played a part in Son committing himself to the club.
However, if Spurs hadn’t qualified, the view was that Son would likely leave, and Liverpool were said to be sniffing around at that time as they prepared to lose Sadio Mane from their squad.
Son was said to be interested in the move, but it never came to fruition in the end as the ‘world class’ attacker remains at Tottenham to this day.
Son at Liverpool is a frightening prospect. He could play either that left wing or central striker role in Jurgen Klopp’s side perfectly, and perhaps the Reds wouldn’t have experienced such a dip last season with Son in the team.
That being said, Son himself didn’t have his best season last time around, so perhaps the fact that this move didn’t go ahead was best for all parties.
It’s interesting to hear that Liverpool were such strong admirers of Son, and we have to wonder if a premature departure for the South Korean would’ve changed Harry Kane’s mind about staying at Spurs for another season too.
This is certainly an interesting alternate reality to ponder.
