Arsenal may now have reason to act quickly if they hope to sign one transfer target in the summer window, with the player’s entourage now aware of interest from Barcelona.

Arsenal fans will probably be hoping that the end of Euro 2024 marks the start of the Gunners stepping up their interest in several players, as Mikel Arteta’s men attempt to get across the line in the Premier League title race at the third time of asking this coming season.

Arsenal are working on a move for Riccardo Calafiori after the youngster’s superb showing for Italy this summer, while they are also looking at options in the middle of the park.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly spoken with Mikel Merino about a potential move to Arsenal. But unsurprisingly, the Gunners are not the only team chasing his signature.

Arsenal target Mikel Merino aware of Barcelona interest

According to a report from Sport, Merino’s entourage are aware of interest from Barcelona, with the Catalan giants potentially looking into players they could offer Real Sociedad as part of a move for the £21 million-rated midfielder.

The report notes that he is looking set to leave San Sebastián in this window, and it is suggested that he is waiting for Barca – which may come as a blow to Arsenal.

A potentially ‘world-class’ signing

Merino could prove to be an incredibly shrewd signing for the Gunners, particularly when you consider his reported asking price. He is someone Kieran Tierney has previously labelled ‘world-class‘ with the pair playing together in La Liga last season.

Thomas Partey has shown glimpses of his quality, but has struggled to stay fit while in North London. Meanwhile, Jorginho turns 33 before the turn of the year. So signing Merino to play alongside Declan Rice could prove to be a very smart piece of business.

But clearly, Barcelona are hoping to have the decisive say on his future over the coming weeks.
