Jonathan Woodgate has told the Sunday Mirror (27/3; page 73) that he is sure that Tottenham Hotspur will attempt to agree a new contract with Antonio Conte as they are not going to be able to get a better manager.

Conte has had an intriguing time at Spurs so far. It is surely fair to say that the club have made plenty of progress. However, results perhaps tell a slightly different story.

Tottenham’s two wins just before the international break marked the first time since the turn of the year that they have won back-to-back. And they are out of the FA Cup.

However, finishing in the top-four in the Premier League remains very possible. And the improvement that the side look to have made will whet the appetite for the summer and Conte’s first full season at the helm.

Conte has flirted with the idea of leaving Tottenham. And while things look a lot brighter now, Spurs do find themselves in a precarious situation. His current contract is set to expire next summer – though there is an option to extend.

Woodgate was lauding the two signings Tottenham made in January. And he went on to suggest that keeping Conte is going to be crucial to their progress.

“Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp are a bit too similar,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“Bentancur looks stronger in that position.

“I didn’t know a lot about Kulusevski when he first came.

“But he’s got a floating role on the right-hand side and has done well.

“Spurs have to sign these types of players to really progress.

“Conte’s only got an 18-month contract, but I’m sure that’ll get renewed because Spurs aren’t going to get a better manager.”

Tottenham agreeing new contract with Conte will send out exciting message

Conte appears to be happy at Tottenham. But much may depend on the kind of ambition Tottenham show in the summer.

Keeping Harry Kane and bringing in several new signings could be crucial to holding onto the Italian.

But it is a balancing act. Conte staying at Tottenham also opens the door for a much more exciting summer in North London.
