Woodgate discusses £40m-rated Manchester United star, amid reported interest from Tottenham

Jonathan Woodgate suggested Anthony Martial needs to leave Manchester United on TalkSPORT on Wednesday – with Tottenham reportedly keen.

Martial, 25, is on the fringes at Old Trafford – especially after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in both Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

The France international was handed his second start of 21-22 on Wednesday, as Manchester United took on West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

But United succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford – Manuel Lanzini scoring the only goal of the game. United were poor, and looked toothless.

Martial was partly to blame given he played 90 minutes. Discussing Martial, Woodgate told TalkSPORT that Solskjaer must be ‘pulling his hair out’.

“He’s never looked like he is happy to play football, even when he scores. You’ve just got to try and get him onside somehow,” Woodgate said.

“I bet Solskjaer is pulling his hair out over it. They have got better; Greenwood, Ronaldo, Sancho. I don’t see him getting many minutes.”

Woodgate on Martial: Should Manchester United join Tottenham?

Eurosport claim this week that Manchester United are ready to offload Martial if offers of £40million are tabled for the ex-Monaco attacker.

Back in the summer, the Daily Star said that Spurs were looking at Martial – but that they were put off by his wage demands.

But that could start to reduce if Martial realises he needs a move. Tottenham might be ideal for the Frenchman, especially under Nuno.

The Portuguese gaffer likes quick, on-the-break attacking players in his side like Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn – playing off of Harry Kane.

But while Woodgate suggests he needs a move due to a lack of game time, do Tottenham really want a player that looks unhappy? Time will tell.
