‘Wonderful’: Gordon Strachan names the Celtic player who was better than Vinicius Jr vs Real Madrid

Celtic’s Champions League campaign came to a disappointing end last night, after a 2-0 defeat to RB Leipzig.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will now almost certainly have to win their last two matches to qualify for the Europa League.

Speaking on BT Sport (11/10 7:45pm), Gordon Strachan was discussing Celtic’s current squad.

Strachan was full of praise for plenty of Celtic players, but one man in particular stood out.

The former Scotland manager said that Jota was a huge loss for the Bhoys after his previous Champions League performances.

In particular, he highlighted that Jota was better than Vinicius Jr for the first half of their match earlier in the campaign.

Celtic went into half-time level with Real Madrid in that match, and had missed the better chances.

However, Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard put them to the sword in the second half and ran out 3-0 winners.

Jota was better than Vinicius Jr

Speaking on BT Sport, Strachan said: “I think they’re all good players, but he’s (Jota) the one player that buys you time.

“His ability, defenders look at him and think, ‘I’m not diving in’ so he can keep it.

“Now that means getting your players into good defensive positions, or more importantly getting them into attacking positions.

“Good defenders will wait for support and maybe won’t dive in, other players, they might take a chance and think, ‘I can get this’, he buys you time.

“If you allow him to run at you, he can cross with his right foot, left foot.

“I’ve got to say in the first half against Real Madrid, he was a better player than Vinicius Jr., he was wonderful that night.”

Jota was missing last night after going off at half-time against St. Johnstone at the weekend.

Celtic were once again wasteful in front of goal despite creating plenty of chances.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Giorgos Giakoumakis all missed great opportunities.

Leipzig eventually made them pay, with Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg ending Celtic’s Champions League hopes.

Attention will now turn to the Scottish Premiership, and Postecoglou will be hoping his Portuguese winger is available again.

Celtic fans will be hoping Jota can return at the same levels that saw Strachan say he was better than Vinicius Jr.
