Wolves will need to act fast if they still want Zinchenko after contract talks begin

Versatile Manchester City ace Oleksandr Zinchenko has opened contract talks with the club, according to the Sun.

The Ukrainian is approaching the final year of his contract and was close to the exit door last summer as Sky Sports reported that Wolves agreed a £16m fee for his services in August.

But after another impressive season where the midfielder has filled in at left-back for much of his first-team exposure, talks over a new contract means that the Old Gold will need to act fast if they still want to sign him.

As it turns out, they went for Jonny Otto, which has worked out well but they could perhaps have offered Zinchenko the opportunities to play regularly in the engine room.

Persuading the player himself to join was the issue last summer and if he is as keen to stay at City again this summer then Wolves may have missed the boat last summer.

Wolves have done well without him but the fact that Nuno Santo has operated with such a small squad indicates how highly he rated Zinchenko – he was willing to expand and bring him in.

Zinchenko needs games though, and that might be the only niggling doubt in his mind as City table the new deal – and if Santo still wants him, he’ll need to get in there quickly.
