Wolves were right not to gamble on Southampton striker Austin

Wolverhampton Wanderers look to have passed up the opportunity to sign Southampton striker Charlie Austin.

It has been reported on transfer deadline day (talkSPORT) that Cardiff City have now entered the race to sign the English forward.

Austin has reportedly been told that he can leave the club this month as he wants to try and get regular first-team football.

The ex-QPR hitman has struggled to get minutes this term, with Danny Ings and Shane Long proving difficult to dislodge from the starting XI.

New boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has used him sparingly since coming in to replace Mark Hughes, and there’s every chance he will up sticks before the 11pm deadline.

Wolves right not to gamble

One club credited with an interest in Austin was Wolves.

Last week The Telegraph reported that the Black Country club were interested in signing him on loan with a view to a permanent move.

But with deadline day having arrived, the supposed interest has cooled and it looks as though Wolves will not be trying to facilitate a deal.

Wolves are in a strong enough position not to take a gamble on Austin.

They will not be threatened by relegation and are probably just about too far off challenging for the Europa League.

Austin’s injury record is quite poor and his form this season has been underwhelming.

The fact that he has been unable to displace Long perhaps tell it’s own story.
