In the summer Colombia had a new star making waves in midfield. With James Rodriguez struggling with injury, Los Cafeteros had to rely on Juan Fernando Quintero to be their main creative force.

He certainly did not disappoint. He put in some brilliant displays for his nation, who were knocked out by England in the second round of the competition.

It caused plenty of teams to be linked with the player, including Wolverhampton Wanderers. According to Spanish paper AS in the summer, Wolves were interested in the player along with Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.

His situation was, however, complicated. Contracted to Porto but on loan at River Plate, that deal would have to be broken in order for Wolves or any club to sign the player.

However, Quintero did not want to leave the Argentine side for one massive reason, the Copa Libertadores. By the time the World Cup had rolled around, River Plate were already into the knockout stages of the competition. With dreams of lifting the trophy, Quintero did not want to end his loan spell.

Last night, he made that dream come true. Quintero was the hero as River Plate defeated eternal rivals Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores final after extra-time. Quintero scored a fantastic goal from the edge of the box to make the score 2-1, before providing the assist for the third goal.

He was the toast of River after the game and Wolves fans will no doubt be wondering if a move could now be on.

It was recently reported by A Bola, as relayed by RCN Sports, that River have an option to buy Quintero for just €3.25 million (£2.9 million), a fee which should surely have Wolves interested.

Now he has achieved his Copa goal, it might be time for Wolves to come calling again.
