Wolves star Coady must prove Southgate wrong by outclassing Dunk this weekend

Many Wolves fans were aggrieved when Gareth Southgate chose not to select Conor Coady in his latest England squad.

The Wolves man was overlooked by Southgate, despite starring at the back in the Premier League this season.

Coady has made the step up to the top flight with aplomb and has been an integral part of a solid Wolves back-line which has provided a platform for success so far this season.

But when England’s UEFA Nations League squad was announced, there was no place there for Coady.

John Stones, Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez are widely considered to be Southgate’s top three choices at centre-half.

But there are spots available in the squad and many English centre-backs have been hoping for the call.

James Tarkowski of Burnley was the lucky man but he had to withdraw from injury.

When a vacancy emerged, Wolves fans were surely anticipating that their captain would be called up to the squad.

But instead, he was snubbed in favour of Brighton’s Lewis Dunk.

This weekend is Coady’s best chance to show Southgate that he was wrong as Wolves face Brighton.

The 25-year-old takes his side down to the south coast and will be hoping to keep in-form Glenn Murray quiet and outclass Dunk.

A solid and assured display will surely have Southgate wondering if he picked the right centre-back last time out.
