Wolves should rival Fulham for Matteo Darmian

Wolverhampton Wanderers should consider joining Fulham in the race to sign Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian in January.

Apparently the Cottagers have ‘shown an interest’ in the Italian in recent days.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Claudio Ranieri is keen to snap up his fellow countryman next month.

Fulham have the worst defensive record in the Premier League at the moment so it’s little wonder the ex-Leicester City and Chelsea boss is looking to solidify things at the back a bit.

The player would reportedly rather return to Italy in the form of Internazionale or Lazio, two other clubs credited with an interest in him.

But perhaps Wolves ought to throw their hat into the ring.

Wolves need a right-back to challenge Doherty

Nuno Espirito Santo has made no secret of the fact he wants some new additions to his squad in January.

The ex-Porto manager wants to sign a new striker and a midfielder, but also wants competition for Matt Doherty at right-back.

Doherty has been one of Wolves’ best players following their return to the Premier League and has started every game so far.

He had an injury scare over the most recent international break but managed to recover in time to face Huddersfield Town, but Nuno is very light in the position and who knows what he’d have done had Doherty not been fit.

Darmian, a £13m signing from Torino back in 2015 (Sky Sports), hasn’t set the world alight at Old Trafford, but he could be an astute signing for Wolves.

He is no stranger to playing as a right wing-back, and he also has the versatility to play on the opposite flank which could come in handy.

He is a player in need of a fresh start somewhere else, and Wolves should give him something to think about as he eyes an enticing return to his homeland.
