Wolves must learn quickly from their harshest Premier League lesson yet

There are two ways in which Wolves’ surprising 2-0 home defeat to Watford can be interpreted.

In keeping with their hugely impressive start to life in the Premier League, the more optimistic is that they were hit by a double sucker-punch by a side who have taken bigger scalps than Wolves already this season and there is no need to ask questions.

Alternatively, some may choose to dig deeper. Why were an out of form Watford side out of sight on Wolves’ home patch before a quarter of the game had even elapsed?

When that defensive solidity that brought Nuno Santo’s men a series of narrow wins or impressive draws with the Manchester clubs falls away, is there a lack of creativity beneath?

Perhaps more pertinent, did Wolves get complacent? The international break allowed for reflection on the early part of the season and for praise to come in for a newly-promoted side performing so well.

Wolves may have taken their eye off the ball slightly; learning in the process that nothing can be taken for granted in the Premier League.

They must take on board that lesson quickly. There is the talent in the Wolves ranks to finish in the top ten, but consistency will be key. They must be at it every week.

Complacency will be their biggest barrier to a successful season. The Watford loss should serve to stamp it out.
