Wolves fans criticise Matt Doherty after Watford loss

Wolverhampton Wanderers were beaten away to Watford on New Year’s Day – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter ripped into defender Matt Doherty for his performance.

Wolves suffered a 2-1 loss at Vicarage Road in the Premier League and stay seventh in the table, but would have jumped up to fifth with a win.

Gerard Deulofeu and Abdoylaye Doucoure scored for a Watford side that are enjoying a remarkable turnaround under manager Nigel Pearson.

Pedro Neto pulled a goal back on the hour mark for Wolves and they also had a man extra for the final 20 minutes when Christian Kabasele was sent off for the hosts.

But Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were unable to find a leveller against 19th-placed Watford and started 2020 with a loss.

They host Manchester United at the weekend in the third round of the FA Cup, before hosting Newcastle United in the Premier League.

A selection of Wolves supporters on social media singled out 27-year-old Doherty after his display against Watford.

The right wing-back lacked the same kind of end product in the final third that he usually does, while defensively he was caught out on the counter attack.
