Wolves confirm the signing of Lyon defender Fernando Marcal

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed the signing of Brazilian defender Fernando Marcal from Lyon.

The Black Country club have followed up their club-record signing of teenager Fabian Silva with the South American, who caught the eye of English spectators with Lyon in the Champions League, helping Rudi Garcia’s side reach the semi-finals.

Wolves have decided to move for another central defender in order to bolster their backline and increase squad depth ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Marcal had made 68 appearances for Lyon after joining the club in 2017.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

The South American has impressed over the past couple of years and can operate comfortably on the left side of a back three.

Wolves use three central defenders and wing-backs, making him an ideal acquisition.

Supposedly he has only costing the club around €2 million/£1.78 million (Sky Sports), which is far less than the club-record £35 million shelled out for Fabio Silva yesterday (BBC Sport).

TBR’s View – Depth at little cost

The development has come somewhat out of the blue, but Wolves appear to have done decent business here.

Getting a versatile and experienced defender like Marcal in for just £1.78 million is a very risk-free move, and the star can provide cover on the left side of Wolves’ defence and allow Romain Saiss to move up the pitch if needs be.

With Jonny currently out injured, he could also be used as cover for the Spaniard.
