‘Woeful’… Chris Sutton rips into £47m Manchester United player

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes received criticism from Chris Sutton as the Red Devils lost to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Man United midfielder delivered a poor performance in the 3-0 defeat to the Cherries at Old Trafford, struggling to take control of the middle of the park.

Fernandes also got himself suspended for next week’s meeting with Liverpool after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season for remonstrating with the referee.

SuttChris Suttonon, covering the match on BBC Radio 5 Live, was not impressed with the £47million man in the slightest.

“Bruno Fernandes ranting and frothing at the mouth but the referee Peter Bankes not taking any nonsense, that’s the way it should be,” he said, as per BBC Sport.

“You can understand the frustration but maybe he should be angry at himself. Maybe he is angry at himself because some of his passing in the second half has been woeful.”

Bruno Fernandes set for rare absence as Manchester United head to Liverpool next weekend

Fernandes has been a key figure for Man United this season, having started every Premier League game this term, and so his absence against Liverpool will be heavily felt.

The Portugal international has contributed five goals and five assists for the Red Devils across the English top-flight and the Champions League in 2023-24.

Indeed, the Liverpool game will be the first league match Fernandes won’t have played in since November 2022, when he was absent for a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa, again due to suspension.

Man United went into the Bournemouth game on the back of a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in midweek, and Erik ten Hag was hoping to build on that positive result.

However, Man United were put to the sword by the Cherries at Old Trafford. Dominic Solanke opened the scoring after just five minutes, and they never looked back.

Philip Billing doubled the visitors’ lead in the 68th minute, before Marcos Senesi added a third just a few minutes later.

Ten Hag had won the Premier League Manager of the Month award in November, but now he has fallen to a second top-flight defeat in three games.
