Celtic are set to lose three key defenders at the end of the season. Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig are nearing the final three months of their contract, while Filip Benkovic is only on loan. Replacements are needed.
But criteria also needs to be met. Without the towering presence of either Boyata and Benkovic at centre-back and the aerial ability of Lustig on the right, Celtic lack aerial prowess.
Only Kristoffer Ajer, Jack Hendry and Nir Bitton offer any bit of height in defence but none of those are first choice. Celtic need a first-choice centre-back who is dominant in the air.
CNN Turk may have allayed Celtic fans’ fears. They claim that the Scottish champions are interested in raiding Serbian side Red Star Belgrade for up-and-coming defender Srdjan Babic.
The report claims that Celtic are in the midst of a hotly-contested race to sign 22-year-old Babic, along with OGC Nice, Feyenoord and AS Monaco. Babic stands at a lofty 195 centimetres, or 6ft 4in.
That lofty frame and ability in the air is just what Celtic need this summer, with Boyata, Benkovic and Lustig all leaving. Babic is also rather impressive with the ball on the deck, and is known to nick the odd goal.
He has scored three goals in 14 league games for Red Star this season. It remains to be seen how much Babic will cost, though, with almost three years remaining on his contract.
Celtic simply have to win the race for Babic and beat the likes of Monaco and Nice to his signature, given that they need him a lot more than their counterparts.
