Liverpool face one of the biggest fixtures of the season on Wednesday as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in a crucial Champions League tie, but there could still be a big blow with reports that Sadio Mane may miss out.
The Liverpool Echo say that the Senegal international has been struck down by illness and faces a race against time to recover in order to be fit to start in Paris at the Parc des Princes.
That presents a new opportunity to Naby Keita, who has been stuck to the bench since overcoming injury. The most likely scenario is that Xherdan Shaqiri will step forward into a more advanced role, potentially opening up a chance for Keita in the middle of the park.
Jurgen Klopp’s selection may well reflect how happy he is with Keita given that the alternative may be a more conservative choice of Fabinho or reverting to last season’s midfield three with Jordan Henderson and James Milner alongside Georgino Wijnaldum.
Keita will be waiting for his big opportunity and there are few fixtures of such high profile for him to make a statement and begin to justify his transfer fee.
If selected to feature in Europe in such a big game, Keita can’t afford to let another chance slip on the biggest stage.
