One winner, one loser should £35 million Maxi Gomez join West Ham

West Ham have been impressive in the transfer market this summer but are yet to address one of their major concerns: a lack of goals. Now though, that could be about to change as a bid has been turned down for Maxi Gomez, according to reports.

The Mirror believe that an opening bid of £27 million was rejected by Celta Vigo, who signed the Uruguayan only 12 months ago, and it will take the full £35 million of his release clause in order to take Gomez to east London.

After 18 goals in 36 games in La Liga last season, the 21-year-old impressed many and has been surrounded by speculation throughout the summer and that is exactly what he could bring to the London Stadium.

“It depends which players will not continue in the club and also on the options we have to replace them. So the sporting director and myself as manager have to work very hard to be absolutely sure that we have the squad that we need for the Premier League. As you know, it’s always so tight and so difficult, so we want to make sure we don’t make a mistake in the makeup of the squad.”

Manuel Pellegrini has hinted that there could be another signing.

Winner: Manuel Pellegrini

Coach Manuel Pellegrini has hinted that he would be keen for more signings this summer and it’s likely that in attack would be a top priority for that. Marko Arnautovic has been deployed as a centre forward throughout pre-season but Pellegrini may want a more traditional striker to take up the role as he has deployed at previous clubs.

It would also be a symbolic win for the coach if he can persuade David Gold and David Sullivan to continue their summer spending even after some of the signings they have already made. Such a show of faith would be an investment in his project.

Loser: Javier Hernandez

The Mexican striker was the marquee signing last summer from Bayer Leverkusen but failed to live up to expectations. Another new arrival, and an expensive one at that, would push him even further down the pecking order behind the likes of Marko Arnautovic.

After just 16 Premier League starts in his debut season at the club, the arrival of a younger and fitter option with many similarities as a poacher who harries defenders, the arrival of Gomez would surely spell the end of Hernandez’s time in London, even if it may not necessarily mean an immediate exit this summer.
