‘Wind up’: Some Newcastle United fans react as Steve Bruce claims players need a break
Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after Chronicle Live quoted Steve Bruce as claiming his players are in desperate need of a break.
The Magpies have been plagued by injury issues and an outbreak of coronavirus this season, which forced their training ground to close and Bruce feels has taken its toll on his squad.
Bruce previously told BBC Radio 5 Live that midfielder Isaac Hayden had been ‘knocked to hell’ after contracting Covid-19, while Jamaal Lascelles and Allan Saint-Maximin missed eight and nine Premier League games respectively after they tested positive.
Saint-Maximin has also sat out four top-flight fixtures due to ankle and groin injuries, while Callum Wilson missed nine matches with a hamstring tear, Miguel Almiron sat out two with a knee issue and Federico Fernandez missed eight due to Covid-19 and a calf injury.
Newcastle also lost Hayden for the remainder of the season after he sustained a significant knee injury in March, Fabian Schar due to knee ligament damage in February and are yet to see Lascelles return from a stress fracture in his foot sustained last month.
Bruce feels his squad is now running on empty as he looks to secure Newcastle’s top-flight survival with a positive performance at Leicester City on Friday night, accepting the mitigating circumstances have helped toward a relegation fight.
“A lot of people are running on empty because it’s been non-stop, basically, for two years, especially the players,” Bruce said. “The players desperately need a break. I’ve never experienced anything quite like when Covid hit and when it hit us after Crystal Palace, how ruthless and brutal it was.”

If I was a player being set up to fail and be embarrassed with 30 percent possession every week I would be desperate for time off as well https://t.co/G0HDhnQ37k
