Wolverhampton Wanderers put in an excellent performance this weekend in order to hold Manchester City to a 1-1 draw. The newly-promoted side gave City plenty to think about going forward, whilst maintaining a solid base defensively to keep the champions at bay.
Wolves were certainly indebted to the performance of Willy Boly. The Frenchman scored their goal, although it did prove to have come off his hand, and was a rock at the back.
The 27-year-old was perhaps the Championship’s star defender last season but there were always fears he might not be able to translate that into the Premier League. Based on yesterday’s evidence, those fears can be allayed.
He constantly threw himself into opposition shots and did a great job marshalling the ever-threatening Sergio Aguero.
It was a testament to his excellent performance that he will feel disappointed in allowing Aymeric Laporte to power home a header, even though in reality there was little more he could do to stop a wonderful delivery being bulleted home off his countryman’s head.
Overall it was a tremendous performance from Boly. Wolves paid Porto a fee reportedly in the region of £10 million to make his stay at Molineux permanent this summer.
If he continues to perform like this, it will not be a waste of money.
