Willian set for frustrating spell if Arsenal form doesn’t turn around soon

After an outstanding debut, it seems fair to say that Willian has not kicked on as some expected during the early stages of his Arsenal spell.

The Brazilian looked to be an inspired signing. He scored nine goals and contributed seven assists in the Premier League for Chelsea last season.

Signing him on a free therefore, looked to be a masterstroke from Mikel Arteta’s men. And that feeling only increased as he provided two assists in the win at Fulham.

However, since then, it could be argued that no Arsenal regular has come in for more criticism from fans than the 32-year-old.

You could understand why Gunners supporters expected more. Even on a free transfer, he has still proved to be an expensive signing. The Daily Mail previously claimed that he was set to earn £220,000-a-week in North London.

With that in mind, perhaps it could be suggested that Willian is the player who needs to make the biggest improvement following the international break.

Arsenal boast a lot of quality in the final third. Willian’s place in the side therefore, is not set in stone by any means.

Nicolas Pepe, for example, has looked a lot more dangerous than his teammate in recent weeks. And yet, he has only made one Premier League start this term.

After a shocking defeat in their final game before the break, Arsenal certainly return to action this weekend needing to make a massive statement in the coming weeks.

But perhaps, no player has a bigger point to prove than Willian. Arteta may struggle to ignore the calls for the attacker to be left out should they get any louder.
