Williams was linked with Villa in April and Everton have now confirmed his release

Aston Villa were linked with a swoop for Ashley Williams in April.

Premier League club Everton have confirmed their released list on their official website, and Welsh international Ashley Williams is among them.

The former Swansea man spent 2018/19 out on loan at Stoke and it’s not too surprising that he’s joining fellow defender Phil Jagielka in leaving Goodison Park this summer.

A statement on the website said: “Everton can confirm Ashley Williams will leave the Club when his current contract expires at the end of the month.

“The Wales international made 73 appearances and scored three goals during his three years with the Blues.”

Spotrac claim that Williams was on £70,000-a-week at Everton, but perhaps the fact that he is now available on a free transfer may attracted potential suitors.

Back in April, the BBC reported that Aston Villa were among a host of clubs interested in the experienced defender.

That was even before their promotion to the Premier League – and now that they’ve made it, there should be a fair chunk more money in Dean Smith’s budget for the forthcoming season.

Villa’s first-choice central defensive duo Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings were both at the club on loan last term and Smith may need to pursue alternative options to bolster his backline.

If he can get the Williams of Wales’ run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 or his prime with Swansea, then it would be a decent coup – but recent seasons have seen the defender fall a long way from those levels and he is now 34.
