William Saliba reportedly eyed by Marseille for loan transfer following Arsenal return

Arsenal defender William Saliba is on Marseille’s radar this summer, with the French side keen to sign the centre-back on loan.

L’Equipe report that the Ligue 1 club are interested in Saliba, who has returned to Arsenal after a six-month loan spell with OGC Nice.

The 20-year-old defender is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Gunners since signing in 2019.

The report also states that Nice, as well as Bayer Leverkusen, are interested in Saliba.

However, football.london reporter Chris Wheatley claimed last week that the youngster will not be leaving Arsenal this summer.

With Brazilian defender David Luiz leaving the Gunners recently, a centre-back spot is available in the Arsenal squad. And it seems like Saliba will be the player that will be filling up this vacant position in the team.

Saliba had an enjoyable time with Nice in his short spell with the club. The youngster scored his first-ever professional goal on the final day of the Ligue 1 season. In total, the defender made 20 league starts for the French side.

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has already spoken about his admiration for Saliba, and that he would be open to signing the defender on loan for another year.

The club official said via GFFN: “If we could extend him by a year, we’d do that gladly. But he belongs to Arsenal, we don’t have control.”

Arsenal need to retain Saliba at all costs

Despite not featuring once for Arsenal’s first-team, Saliba’s time for the Gunners has been widely talked about by both the press and supporters.

Yet despite this report from France, it seems all-but-certain the French youngster will be staying in north London next season.

The departure of Luiz opens up a spot in the defence for Saliba, who thrived with Nice last campaign.

And the 2021/22 season could finally be the year the French youngster shows Arsenal and the Premier League what he’s all about, and why his hype has been worth the wait.
