William Saliba has slight dig at Mikel Arteta, says he should have been given Arsenal chance

Arsenal defender, William Saliba, has hit out a bit at Mikel Arteta, insisting he should have been given more of a chance to prove himself in north London.

Saliba returned to Arsenal in the summer after a fruitful loan spell with St Etienne, but was left out of proceedings by Arteta and once again moved out on loan last week, joining Nice.

After signing for the Gunners for £27m, Saliba might have expected to have made a bigger impression so far. And speaking in France yesterday, the young defender appeared to have a slight dig at Arteta for not giving him longer.

“The coach immediately told me that I was not ready. I would have at least liked to have had a chance to rediscover my rhythm,” Saliba said (via Goal).

“My first six months were difficult, because I was coming from six months where I wasn’t able to train because I was at home and couldn’t train outside, couldn’t play. I arrived there as they were finishing the league season, so I was training alone. As soon as they came back from holidays, we quickly had the first friendly matches where I lacked rhythm and was a bit insufficient physically.”

Saliba, along with Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana, were shining lights for St Etienne last term. But while Fofana is looking in fine form for the Foxes, the young Gunner must prove himself once more.

Mikel Arteta is clearly not afraid to make the big calls, like he has with Mesut Ozil as well, and Saliba needs to get his head down and play well while back in France.

He is very much still a young man learning his craft so a good half a season could do wonders for Saliba ahead of next season.
