William Gallas has posted an honest verdict on his Instagram story after watching his two old sides do battle at Stamford Bridge, as Emile Smith-Rowe’s goal saw Arsenal hold on to beat Chelsea – and the Frenchman admitted he was surprised.
The Gunners kept their faint Europa League hopes alive with an excellent three points against Thomas Tuchel’s men, who remain in the hunt for the double this season – having reached the FA Cup and Champions League final.
A mistake from Jorginho saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set up Smith-Rowe to score his second Premier League goal of the season, just 48 hours after he netted the first of his career during Sunday’s 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at the Emirates.
Gallas gave his verdict on Instagram, after earlier staging a poll to see who would win the match. He agreed that he had expected to see Chelsea beat Arsenal, with 82% of votes going the way of the West London side – and was surprised.
“Considering the position of the two teams and the form at the moment from Chelsea, I thought like most people that Chelsea were going to win this game,” Gallas claimed, in a post on his Instagram story on Thursday morning.
“In this kind of match, especially a London Derby, we don’t play it, we win it. That is the beauty of football because thwe forecasts or statistics do not mean anything at the end,” the Frenchman continued.

TBR’s view – Do Arsenal have a chance of Europa League?
Well, they will have to finish in seventh. They have two winnable games left to play, against Brighton and Crystal Palace – but the Seagulls are in good form and have picked up some decent results against Arsenal, even during Mikel Arteta’s reign,
They simply have to win both matches, which would take them to 61. They then have to hope that Everton, Spurs, West Ham or Liverpool tail off towards the end of the campaign – with only three of those four able to qualify for the Europa League.
