Ambitious club Reading are one side aiming to build upon their underwhelming 17th placed finish in the Championship in 2015-16 and in a bid to strengthen are poised to sign Dutch winger Roy Beerens from Hertha Berlin on a three-year contract.

Beerens will join the Berkshire side for a fee of roughly £830,000, having made 29 appearances and registering four goals since joining in 2014.

The Dutchman came through the ranks at PSV Eindhoven before joining Heerenveen where he spent one season prior to a three year stint at AZ Alkmaar. He will be Reading’s second signing of the summer under newly-appointed manager Jaap Stam, and signals a change of direction for the club under their young coach.

The winger, known for his pace and quick dribbling will provide an option for the creativity of goals, bit will not prove a straightforward solution to accommodating the goal deficit left by Nick Blackman in his departure to Derby County.

His experience in the Bundesliga will undoubtedly prove key in a division as demanding as the Championship, but for a club with the success rate Reading has, Beerens will be expected to hit the ground running to help propel the club back towards the Premier League.

As well as his creative influence, goals will be vital for a Reading side that has enjoyed the influence of an in-form Jobi McAnuff in years gone by. Supporters of the Berkshire side will certainly be hoping the Dutchman proves value for money and helps the club toward the top flight.

His international experience is an asset for certain, and seasoned professionals may be the go to route for this club to find its way back to the top tier. However, if they are to stay there, Reading fans will hope their man performs for his countryman and comes up with the goods to propel them up the division.
