Will Tottenham sell Toby Alderweireld after Tanguy Ndombele signing and Eric Dier plans?

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the club record signing of French international midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. As reported by the BBC, the midfield general has cost Tottenham £53.8 million. He becomes Spurs’ second signing of the summer following Jack Clarke’s arrival from Leeds United.

The arrival of Ndombele will no doubt cast doubt on the future of several first-team midfielders. Notably, Eric Dier appears to be under threat.

As reported by the Daily Express, Tottenham are considering letting Eric Dier leave this summer.

But could Ndombele’s arrival actually speed up the departure of centre-back Toby Alderweireld?

The Belgian is out of contract in 12 months time. In recent times, he has been heavily linked with an exit. As reported by The Telegraph. Alderweireld has a clause in his contract this summer allowing a £25 million transfer.

Football.London recently reported that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was considering pushing Dier back into a centre-back role next season after unconvincing performances in midfield.

That would give Tottenham Jan Vertonghen, Davison Sanchez, Juan Foyth and Dier as central defensive options without Alderweireld.

In terms of the player most likely to leave, Alderweireld is the clear favourite.

Tottenham have simply not been able to tie him down to a new deal and, considering his age, his market value is set to start dropping.  Rather than risk losing the Belgian for nothing, a sale this summer is the best business move for Tottenham.

Selling Alderweireld now and backing the younger options, including Dier, would be a controversial decision. It could also be for the best regarding their young defender’s development.
