Liverpool progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Southampton’s expense on Tuesday night.
Arne Slot’s charges opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when summer signing Alexander Isak got his first goal for the club.
Southampton equalised on 76 minutes through Shea Charles, but Hugo Ekitike struck Liverpool’s winner in the 86th minute.
Southampton boss Will Still spoke post-match as he shared the exchange that he and Ekitike – his former player at Reims – had ahead of the game.

Will Still praises ‘incredibly annoying’ Hugo Ekitike
Ekitike went from hero to zero in a matter of seconds in the game as he scored the winner, only to get sent off for taking off his shirt.
The £69million man was already on a booking ahead of his winner, resulting in a second yellow card which means he’ll be suspended for Liverpool’s game.
Still described Ekitike as a “funny lad” and revealed that the Frenchman told him pre-match that he would come on, score, give him his shirt and then leave.
The Southampton boss also admitted that Ekitike is “incredibly annoying to play against”.
“Hugo cracks me up, he’s a funny lad”, Still told reporters at Anfield, as per GFFN.
“We caught up before the game, and he said he’d come on and score, give me a shirt and b—-r off, which is exactly what he’s done.
“He’s a constant threat, and he’s incredibly annoying to play against.”
How Hugo Ekitike and Arne Slot reacted after ‘stupid’ sending off
Ekitike may be annoying to play against, but he sadly succeeded in annoying his own manager with his goal celebration.
Arne Slot spoke at length about Ekitike’s red card after the game, concluding by saying: “Needless, not smart. You call it stupid. I call it stupid, by the way, as well.”
Ekitike went on social media on Tuesday night to apologise to the club and the fans.
“I was so excited to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match,” he wrote on Instagram.
“The emotion got the better of me. My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for this victory!”
