It is clear that Rangers need to sign an experienced centre-back this summer, and Steven Gerrard knows that after being linked with Edson Mexer, Martin Skrtel and Timm Klose in recent weeks.
Gareth McAuley’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, while Joe Worrall is to return to Nottingham Forest at the end of his season-long loan.
It leaves Rangers with the impressive but somewhat inexperienced Nikola Katic, as well as Connor Goldson. Gerrard needs an experienced centre-back to add quality, but also one that can give the likes of Katic tips.
Gerrard reportedly travelled to Rennes to meet with Mexer after he scored in a Cup final win over PSG. But he failed to thrash a deal out for the 44-time Mozambique international.
Skrtel has long been linked with a reunion at Ibrox alongside his former Liverpool captain, but it is unlikely given his wages at Fenerbahce. Now, Norwich defender Klose can be added to that list of players Rangers failed to sign.
Switzerland international Klose, 31, was said to be on Rangers shortlist after The Sun on Sunday (28/4; page 59) claimed the Gers were keen on landing the ex-Wolfsburg man on a free – with his contract expiring in June.
But Norwich have ruined any Rangers plans on bringing Klose to Ibrox, by penning him to a new three-year deal – will Rangers regret not looking to convince Klose to choose Glasgow over east Anglia?
Klose is a very good centre-back. Powerful, colossal in the air and comfortable on the ball, Klose would have been one of Gerrard’s best signings since the ex-England captain took over at Rangers.
On a free, plenty of experience in the Premier League, Championship and Bundesliga and even European experience, Klose would have been perfect. Now, Rangers have to look elsewhere.
