The Tottenham team Mauricio Pochettino selected for the 1-0 defeat against Manchester City on Monday night did not include either of the two best playmakers at the club.
Christian Eriksen was hugely impressive in the 2-2 Champions League draw with PSV last Wednesday but was forced to settle for a place on the bench alongside Dele Alli for the visit of the reigning champions.
The decision ultimately did not pay off as Pochettino’s powerful picks were unable to overcome Pep Guardiola’s diminutive playmakers.
Obviously the duo have suffered with injury lately and the Argentine will understandably want to be careful with his players. But did the selection hint that the duo will get the nod against West Ham tonight?
Two games in the space of three days – completely inflicted by Spurs’ own failings in terms of getting their stadium ready on time – requires Pochettino to prioritise.
If there was one game Eriksen and Alli could start this week, it would be the City one. But after being knocked out of the EFL Cup by West Ham last season, perhaps Pochettino is determined to inflict a degree of revenge and not allow history to repeat itself.
That may spell worrying news for the Hammers…
