5) Jamie Vardy

There has been no more romantic tale than the rise of Jamie Vardy.  It has been repeated through endless forms of social media but that’s because it’s so remarkable.  Five years ago, he was at Fleetwood Town in the Conference, now he is the holder of scoring in 11 successive top flight games and is nearing a Premier League title with Leicester City.

Vardy has breathed new life into how to play as the leading man.  He runs endlessly, presses intensely and tracks back as well as anyone, almost proud of his duties he upholds in the team.  He’s been a late bloomer but has been the best striker in the Premier League this campaign.  The Golden Boot will be tough for him to grasp with Kane hitting top form after Vardy’s blistering opening to the season.

Despite everything Vardy has done, his miraculous rise and the fact his team are looking like pulling off one of the greatest shocks in English football history, he is not my Player of the Year.

6) Riyad Mahrez

The Algerian has come from nowhere and produced the kinds of brilliance band magic that the likes of David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi would be proud of.  His performance in their 3-1 win at City was one of the best I’ve seen in the Premier League.  He was efficient, calm, quick and when it mattered, clinical too. He scored a sublime solo goal to put Leicester 2-0 up and cement Leicester’s title credentials.

27 goals and assists in 32 league games is superb and he has to be held up there with the best attacking midfielders in England certainly, possibly Europe with Champions League football secured.

Many Leicester players could have easily claimed Player of the Year – Wes Morgan, Robert Huth, Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton aren’t even on the list.  Kanté and Vardy could win it and it would not be begrudged, same for Harry Kane, but Mahrez has upped his game so much that he has been the best in his position by a country mile putting Silva, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and at times Özil to shame.

It would cap off the season of his life and who knows where it’ll take him next. Will a summer move be in the offing or will he see through the mission and compete in Europe’s elite with Leicester, never thought that sentence would be possible!

Who do you think is the favourite to pick up the award at the end of the season? Will one of Leicester City’s trio be able to top off a successful title-winning campaign, or can one of Harry Kane, Dimitri Payet or Mesut Özil spoil The Foxes’ party?
