Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy has had a frustrating season so far that has mainly been spent sitting in the stands.
The 23-year-old attacker has made just three Premier League starts this campaign and failed to complete 90 minutes in any of them.
His last start in the league came back in December during a 1-1 draw against Everton, but he’s fallen out of favour under manager Rafael Benitez and gone missing.
Newcastle faced Blackburn Rovers in an FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday night and Murphy played the full 120 minutes, which the Magpies eventually won 4-2 after extra-time.
But has Murphy done enough to get back in Benitez’s good books after a promising display?
Murphy was a huge plus for Newcastle in the cup fixture with his pace and dribbling, something that asked questions of the opposition on the counter attack.
The right-winger was pivotal to plenty of the team’s attacking moments and did earn an assist.
He couldn’t have done much more to catch the manager’s eye and it will be intriguing to see if he can begin to feature more regularly in the league.
Newcastle, who sit inside the relegation places, have arguably their biggest fixture of the season to date on Saturday when they host Cardiff City.
It would be a huge vote of confidence if Murphy was able to force his way into the side for the team, but at the very least he needs to try impress if he comes off the bench.
Murphy has the potential to be an important player at St James’ Park if he picks up some confidence and is direct in his play, which is why the cup could be a great springboard.
