Will Manchester United make a £70million move for Monaco winger Bernardo Silva?

The Sun believe that Manchester United are preparing to do battle with Real Madrid in the summer transfer window as the two clubs eye up a move for 22-year-old Monaco winger Bernardo Silva, with a bid of at least £70 million expected in order to win the race for the Portuguese international.

What would he bring to the Red Devils?

Capable of playing as a central attacking midfielder or on either wing, Bernardo Silva brings pace and direct dribbling skills to the game in a way which few others can. A deadly finisher too, the former Benfica midfielder is about as creative as they come and provides both goals and assists for his team, meaning he could work well alongside the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack at Old Trafford. That said, he isn’t afraid to track back and fulfill his defensive duties, which could be an important factor for Jose Mourinho after it seemingly put him off selecting the likes of Anthony Martial in some big fixtures this season.

Is a move likely?

It could be. Monaco will be in no hurry to sell and Silva has three and a half years left on his contract, but they haven’t shied away from accepting big money offers for their players like James Rodriguez in the past. Silva shares an agent with Jose Mourinho, Jorge Mendes, but Mendes also has strong links to Real Madrid via Cristiano Ronaldo amongst others, so that factor may not come into play if it becomes a two horse race.

Verdict

6/10 – The interest may well be real, but the price tag seems too high for a move to be realistic. If the club do make a move for Antoine Griezmann in the summer as is expected, then it is hard to see them being able to justify spending such huge quantities on two players, particularly when Jose Mourinho is said to be desperate to rebuild his defence.
