Italian outlet Tuttosporto believe that Manchester United are one of many clubs believed to be considering a move for AC Milan’s goalkeeping prodigy Gianluigi Donnarumma. The 17-year-old broke into the first team at the San Siro last season and has rapidly become a fan favourite and one of the brightest young talents in football. With David de Gea nine years older than the Italian talent, he could be a long term successor to the United number one shirt.
What would he bring to Old Trafford?
At 6ft5in, Donnarumma certainly offers a physically imposing option in goal and is known to dominate his box.A superb shot stopper too, and with over 60 first team appearances, an Italian Super Cup title in which he won the penalty shoot-out against Gianluigi Buffon and two international caps to his name at such a young age, he isn’t lacking in experience. However, much like de Gea when he moved to England from Madrid, he has room to improve. His preference to punch the ball may be problematic in the Premier League and his kicking certainly leaves something to be desired.
Is a move likely?
In the immediate future it seems unlikely. It is rare that such a youngster would get the first team action he is at the moment, particularly at such a high level, and he would understandably be reluctant to give that up. However, his agent is Mino Raiola, the Italian who worked with United to secure deals for three of his clients, Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, in the summer.
Verdict
5/10 – Long term, it would almost be more surprising if Donnarumma is not being monitored by the club as a potential option, but it seems highly unlikely that he would be open to the move at the moment. At his boyhood club and undisputed first choice, breaking into the international team and in a side that is gradually improving, even the lure of Manchester United may not be enough in this case.
