The Daily Record claim that Manchester United are set to join the race for French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko with Chelsea and Manchester City already vying for the Monaco man. Reports suggest that the Ligue Une club could be tempted to sell the France under 21 international if a bid worth £25 million is made, having initially wanted to hold off considering his future until the summer. With three of the Premier League’s top clubs now fighting over the central midfielder, it seems he could be on his way to England sooner rather than later.
What would he bring to the Premier League?
The 22-year-old prefers to play in a holding midfield role and has been likened to Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic in style. His tough tackling and wide range of passing has seen comparisons drawn to the Serbian, but he also possesses the characteristic of a good shot from distance, with two goals in 16 appearances this season. Bakayoko is keen to control the pace of games and is composed on the ball, so it is clear to see why the clubs are fighting over him.
Is a move likely?
Fairly, money talks and Monaco are said to be considering allowing Bakayoko to leave should they receive an offer that matches their expectations. However, it wasn’t that long ago that speculation suggested that they would refuse to sell the midfielder. If one of the many big clubs can turn his head then a move could well be possible, but it is unlikely that his current club would be happy to see him depart mid-season with them still in the Champions League unless a lucrative bid is received.
Verdict
7/10 – A January move seems unlikely with neither Manchester United or Manchester City seemingly keen to spend big this month. That said, all three could do with additions in central midfield and he would certainly suit the style of Pep Guardiola, would be a ready made replacement for Cesc Fabregas at Chelsea and would suit Manchester United to allow Paul Pogba freedom to roam forward. A move does seem probable, but not this month.
