Will Liverpool or Chelsea win the race for Inter midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia?

Reports indicate that Liverpool and Chelsea are set to do battle not just for the Premier League title, but also for the services of Inter Milan’s holding midfieder Geoffrey Kondogbia. Both clubs are said to have made discrete enquiries into the availability of the Frenchman after he was frozen out of the Inter squad by then manager Frank de Boer. He has since made a return, aided by de Boer’s sacking, but it is unclear if he is now happy to remain in Italy or if he is still hoping for an exit either this month or in the summer.

What would he bring to the Premier League?

The 23-year-old is a tough tackling midfielder who plays a key role in transition between attack and defence with his dribbles forward and quick, short passing moves. He would fit in at Chelsea alongside N’Golo Kante or in either midfield role in Jurgen Klopp’s trio, as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced role. His strength means he shouldn’t struggle to adapt to the Premier League and his technical abilities show exactly what he is capable of.

Is a move likely?

Having been frozen out and looking for a move, his recent return to first team action is unlikely to have deterred the former Monaco midfielder from considering his options. The Italians are unlikely to stand in his way either, but the fee could be a sticking point after they signed him for £30 million from Monaco only 18 months ago.

Verdict

Liverpool – The midfielder would fit in well at both clubs, but given his exit from Milan comes after being sidelined and playing limited amounts of first team football, it seems unlikely that he would take the risk of joining Chelsea without assurances that he would be their big signing in midfield, and they may want an option with a bigger reputation and more experience.
