Will Leeds United regret missing out on Sammie Szmodics?

Leeds United have reportedly missed out in a move to sign Colchester United’s talented midfielder Sammie Szodics. 

As reported by the Bristol Post, Leeds United made a late move to sign the player this week. However, Bristol City have been in discussions over signing the player for some time and appear to have won the race. 

The report claims he will cost Bristol a fee in the region of £750,000. That sort of figure could certainly turn out to be an absolute bargain. 

So will Leeds end up missing out big on the 23-year-old? 

Szmodics made his professional debut, against Bristol City, four days after his 18th birthday. Since then he has been a semi-regular in the Colchester first-team, despite a brief loan spell at Braintree Town in 2015. 

Over the past two seasons, the attacking midfielder has scored 28 goals in 88 games from midfield. Bristol City will feel they have secured a top prospect. 

Leeds will undoubtedly have felt the same if securing his signature. However, in the grand scheme, Leeds fans will not feel too aggrieved. 

Leeds want promotion this season and to do so a high calibre of player needs to be brought in this summer. Szmodics, for his talents, is likely to need at least one season in the Championship before being at that level. 

Leeds have bigger fish to fry in the transfer market this summer.
